A digital story allows teachers to create a simple and entertaining story that shows an aspect of digital citizenship. Digital citizenship is very important for students to understand because they should realize that plagiarism and not crediting sites is a major issue. Also, another component, cyber bullying, is something students need to grasp. Cyber bullying happens all of the time to students, especially ones at the secondary level. By creating a story, I was able to make a fictional story about a girl who was supposed to work on a science project with a popular guy at her school, but when the guy's girlfriend's friend saw the two together, she assumed the two were secretly dating. In turn, she created a rumor that circulated around the school. Even though the rumor wasn't true, it devastated the girl who would never think of stealing another girl's boyfriend away. This digital story allows students to understand the negative consequences of bullying. With one single text, one girl was able to make the entire student body go against poor Deb (the girl completing the science project). It is important that students know why we must never say something that we just heard because it is probably not true.
By practicing digital citizenship, students will also be able to learn the rules of netiquette, how to protect private information, and learn how to stay safe online. It is our jobs as teachers to make sure students understand the importance of these digital rules. I learned that it is my job to help students stay safe on the web and make sure they don't plagiarize others' work.
I learned to use Pixton to create my digital story. This site gave me several options on how to make a story and allowed me the opportunity to create my own characters, backgrounds, and comic strips. I was even able to edit facial expressions in my story and could choose from a variety of props to add in. This was my favorite project to complete because it gave me the chance to be creative and have fun, while learning the importance of digital citizenship.
This is a link to my finalized Pixton project. I am so glad I got to complete this project, and I feel like I really learned a lot from it.
This digital story is linked to ISTE-NETS T standards, in particular promoting and modeling digital citizenship and responsibility (NETS T 4). Teachers are able to advocate, model, and teach ethical uses of digital technology and are able to promote and model digital etiquette and responsible social interactions related to the use of technology by creating this digital story.
