Data Analysis

Student Information System Spreadsheet

Student Data Information from website

Our second project in Technology in the Classroom was to create a student information spreadsheet using data provided. We used this data to calculate averages and grades of students. Even though these were not real students, I was able to practice how to calculate basic data and figure out how to use this data in the classroom. The above photo is from my personal spreadsheet. Teachers are able to type in information such as the student's quiz grades, their average, their improvement percentages, and the letter grade. I was able to calculate each student's official letter grade by using formulas and plugging in data. I was then able to create charts with the data I collected and came up with. I made several graphs where I could figure out students' successes in the classroom. I could also compare students' quiz grades to one another and decide which students still needed additional help.
I was not sure when I came to this class how to calculate students' grades. I can now use this helpful tool in the classroom to figure out my students' grades and use this data to analyze which students are excelling and which are not. I can use this spreadsheet to inform parents of their children's improvements as well. It is easy to save this spreadsheet and e-mail it to parents. This Google document is easy to access anywhere and at any time as long as I have a connection. That means I can add data to the spreadsheet at any time, so I can always have access to students' information. This is very helpful since all the information is saved in one place and easily accessible.
This project incorporates many ISTE-NETS T standards. Teachers demonstrate their ability to design and develop digital age learning experiences and assessments and are able to model digital age work and learning (NETS T 2 and 3). I would be designing digital age learning assessments by creating an online grade book. Students' information is stored, and I could take this data and figure out what  topics still needed to be addressed for certain students. By creating this spreadsheet, I would also be exhibiting my own skills, knowledge, and and work processes of a digital society. I would be communicating with students using the data I had and could also contact their parents. I would evidently be analyzing and evaluating research that would support student learning.
This is the perfect tool because teachers are able to access information online, instead of using an old fashioned grade book and can compare the data and notice data trends. I will definitely be using spreadsheets in my class because they are efficient and provide lots of information that I can use to calculate students' grades and improvement levels.
